Book Review: To Have and to Hoax

Is it too early in the year to pick a favorite book?

Maybe I should say instead my favorite book so far this year? I have a feeling though it will go down as my favorite for 2020.

To simply state I loved this book is a complete understatement. Adore, smitten, head-over-heels are a little closer.

How would I describe this book?

It is a cross between the ever after of Elizabeth Bennett and Mr. Darcy crossed with the War of the Roses. The way Water’s portrayed the enemies to lover’s trope through a marriage kept the genre pleaser fresh and new.

I didn’t know what to expect when I requested this book from Net Galley. I liked the simplicity of the cover and it reminded me of the Proper Romance series I have enjoyed. The writing was smart and the husband and wife are so stubborn, the implausible storylines didn’t seem so implausible. In fact, I do believe both their spirit animals must be donkeys.

The grand gestures were written impeccably by the author and no matter how infuriatingly the characters were, I couldn’t help cheering them on to their happily ever after.

If you like romantic comedies, romances between spouses, or books that involve crazy victorian manners this is the book for you.

I cannot wait for Waters to write more of this series. She sets up quite a few possibilities with the secondary characters who are as entertaining as the leads.

Even better she’s a children’s librarian like me.

To Have and to Hoax by Martha Waters has received rave reviews. It received best romance for April 2020 by Goodreads among others. Readers of Julia Quinn and Jasemine Guillory will love the quick wit of the writing and fresh voice.
